Not just PDFs

A name that says what it is
The result is merged-4-pdfs-2026-09-10.pdf, next to the first file in your order. Sortable by date, and you can tell at a glance what it was.

Merging PDFs on a Mac: common questions
How do I merge PDFs on a Mac without installing anything?
Two ways are built in. In the Finder, select the files in the order you want them, Control-click, then choose Quick Actions › Create PDF; Apple says the files appear in the PDF in the order you select them. In Preview, open the PDFs, choose View › Thumbnails, and drag thumbnails from one document’s sidebar to the other’s; Preview saves changes automatically, so choose File › Duplicate first if you want to keep the originals.
Is there a free PDF merger for Mac?
Yes. Create PDF in the Finder and Preview are built in, and Ricly’s PDF Merge is free for five merges a month. Turning a single image or document into a PDF is free and unlimited.
Can I automate PDF merging on a Mac?
macOS includes an Automator action, Combine PDF Pages, that you can use in a workflow of your own. Ricly is for when you would rather right-click.
Can I choose the order of the files?
That is the point of the tool. The picker opens with your files in natural name order and you drag the thumbnails until it is right. Press Enter to accept what is proposed.
What can I put in a merge?
PDFs, JPG, PNG, HEIC, WebP, TIFF, GIF and BMP, plus Word, ODT, RTF, plain text, HTML and Markdown. Mix them freely in one merge. Images go in untouched: a JPEG is copied as is; PNG, HEIC, TIFF, GIF and BMP go in without further loss, PNG transparency included — so the PDF can weigh more than the pictures. An animated GIF gives its first frame. Need it lighter? Compress PDF.
Does the merged PDF have a table of contents?
Yes. Each file you merge gets a bookmark with its name, without the extension, pointing to its first page — in Preview, View, Table of Contents lists them. Bookmarks that were already inside the source PDFs are not carried over.
Where does the merged file go?
Into the same folder as the first file in your order, named merged-N-pdfs followed by the date. Your originals are untouched.
Will it overwrite a merge I already made?
Never. A second one the same day gets an -a, then -b, and so on. Ricly does not replace a file that already carries the name.
What if one of the files can’t be used?
Then nothing is merged, and Ricly names the file: a password-protected PDF (remove the password first), a file it cannot read, or a document too long to convert. Take it out of the selection, or fix it, and merge again.
Are my documents uploaded?
No. The merge runs on your Mac. Ricly needs the network to sign you in, not to merge, and the documents themselves never leave.
Can I turn a single file into a PDF?
Yes. Right-click one image, Word document, RTF or text file and the menu reads Convert to PDF: no picker, and photo.pdf lands beside the original, never overwriting anything. The image goes in without further loss — a JPEG as is — so the PDF is not lighter than the picture, and an iPhone HEIC comes out noticeably heavier. For a single image, the Finder’s own Create PDF does the same; for a Word document or an RTF, this is the one click. A PDF on its own has nothing to merge, so the item does not appear. Converting a single file is free and unlimited; the 5 free runs a month are for merges.
How many files can I merge at once?
As many as you select — the picker shows them all as thumbnails. It is still one merge against your monthly count.
