All tools/Video to MP4

A MOV nobody can open becomes an MP4 everybody can.

Your phone or your camera writes MOV, and the person on the other side wants MP4. Right-click it and the MP4 lands beside it, converted on your Mac. A 2 GB rush never goes near someone else's server.

WHY YOU WOULD INSTALL IT

You have done this a hundred times.

  1. Open a browser
  2. Find a converter
  3. Upload the clip
  4. Wait for the upload
  5. Wait for the encode
  6. Download it
  7. Move it back

Ricly puts that one in the menu that is already under your cursor. Right-click the clip, pick Convert to MP4, the MP4 lands beside it. The encoder is the one built into macOS, and a two-gigabyte rush never goes near an upload queue.

See what else comes with it
Ricly campaign still. The demo for this tool is being made.

What you get, exactly.

One MP4 per file, exported by the encoder built into macOS. Two files are converted at a time rather than all at once, so your Mac stays usable while a long clip is running.

The encoder is the one in macOS

AVFoundation, the same engine Final Cut and QuickTime use. Nothing to install, no FFmpeg to find, no build to trust. It works the same on Apple silicon and on Intel.

It re-encodes, and we say so

This is a real export, not a rewrap: the picture is decoded and encoded again at high quality. A rewrap, which would copy the stream untouched when the codecs already fit MP4, is a separate piece of work and it is not here yet.

The MP4 lands beside the original

Same folder, same name, new extension. Your MOV is not modified, moved or deleted, and a file that already carries the name is never overwritten — you get a numbered one instead.

A failed export leaves nothing behind

The export writes to a hidden temporary file and only swaps it in when it finishes. You never find a truncated MP4 that plays for four seconds and stops.

Same job. No round trip.

A video is the biggest file most people ever hand to a website, and the upload alone can take longer than the encode. Counted the same way, once your account exists, here is what that costs.

Two at a time inside,
so the Mac stays usable

A folder of rushes is one right-click. The menu reads Convert to MP4 (20 files), and Ricly encodes two at a time so the machine stays usable while it works. Twenty uploads to a converter is twenty times the longest wait there is.

There is a native path, and it is a good one. QuickTime Player exports an MP4 through File, Export As, one clip at a time, into the folder you choose. Ricly uses the same engine underneath. What it adds is the menu, the selection, and the file landing beside the original instead of wherever you last saved.

Send the cut, not the rush.

A MOV your client cannot open becomes an MP4 they can, without the clip ever leaving your Mac.

You came for one tool. 16 more come with it.

Video to MP4 is not an app you install. It is one item in a menu that also carries 16 others — same download, same account, nothing extra to set up.

13 are free, 4 are Pro. They install themselves as they ship, so the menu grows without you doing anything. Upload & Share is the next move when the MP4 is still too big for mail, and Strip Metadata is there for the stills that go with it.

Questions people actually ask.

What does the MP4 contain?

H.264 video and AAC audio, exported with the highest-quality preset of the encoder built into macOS — the same engine QuickTime Player uses.

Is it a re-encode?

Yes, and we say so. The picture is decoded and encoded again at high quality. A rewrap, which copies the stream untouched when the codec already fits, is a different operation and this tool does not do it.

Which files can I use?

MOV and M4V. Anything else in the folder is simply not offered this tool in the menu.

Is the clip uploaded anywhere?

No. The export runs on your Mac. A two-gigabyte rush never goes near a queue, and nothing needs an account with anyone.

Where does the new file go?

Beside the original: same name, .mp4 extension. Your MOV is not modified, moved or deleted, and a name already taken gets a number rather than being overwritten.

Can I convert a whole folder at once?

Select the clips and right-click: the menu reads Convert to MP4 (20 files). Ricly encodes two at a time so the Mac stays usable while it works.

Right Click. Done.
