Two files are grouped only when every byte matches. That is what makes the result safe enough to act on without opening anything.
SHA-256 on the actual bytes
Files are first grouped by size, then hashed with Apple’s own CryptoKit. A copy you renamed is still caught, and two photos that merely look alike never are. No near-matches means no false positives to second-guess.
It walks the whole tree
Right-click one folder and Ricly goes through every folder inside it. Hidden files are skipped, app bundles are not opened up, and symbolic links are left alone.
Nothing is deleted, ever
Everything goes to your Trash, through the same system call Finder uses. You can put a file back from the Trash, and the panel has its own Undo right after a cleanup.
Different names are never auto-checked
When the copies in a group carry several distinct names, Ricly leaves them all unchecked. Those are usually templates or working versions, and the choice stays yours.

macOS has no duplicate finder for your folders. The Photos app spots duplicates inside your photo library, and that is the whole of it — nothing for a Downloads folder, a project drive or an external disk. So the native path really is the first row: sort by size and compare by eye. Counted the same way as everywhere else on this site: once your account exists, and never counting the wait. What no step count shows is the doubt — by hand you are never quite sure two files are the same, and that is the part Ricly removes.

Questions people actually ask.
Does it delete anything on its own?
No. Nothing moves until you press the button, and even then files go to your Trash — the same place a file goes when you drag it there. Empty the Trash yourself when you are sure.
How does it decide two files are the same?
It hashes their contents with SHA-256 after a size pre-filter. Identical hash means identical bytes. A renamed copy is caught; two similar-looking photos are not, because they are not the same file.
Does it find near-duplicates or similar photos?
No, and that is deliberate. Anything approximate produces false positives, and a false positive in a delete tool is the one mistake that is hard to take back.
Which copy does it keep?
One per group, and you choose the rule — newest or oldest. When the copies carry several different names, Ricly checks nothing at all and leaves the decision to you.
Is my folder uploaded anywhere?
No. The scan and the hashing run on your Mac. Ricly checks your account and your remaining allowance, so it needs the network, but no file content leaves.
What counts against the free 10?
Files actually moved to the Trash. Scanning, reviewing and changing your mind cost nothing.
